Something earthy and unexpected, that brightens the landscape with it’s deep tones and originality. Something that surprises and tantalizes you with its beauty and roots firmly planted in a sometime-harsh terrain. Something you happen across by chance and will never forget. That is “Desert Rose” by singer songwriter Ruby James.

James vocal prowess is along the lines of Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks meets the power house vocals of Ann Wilson of Heart. Her music is saucy, sensual, and seductive. Her songs deal delicately with faltering relationships, break-ups, self-assuredness and somebody done somebody wrong songs.

Once in a great while, you put on a CD by an artist you’ve never heard of before and time stops. The voice is new, yet timeless. The lyrics are all original yet feel immediately familiar that explore love, loss and the lure of the road, lived-in, knowing. And the melodies — expertly performed by a first-rate band — carry the easy groove

All Sauce and a Touch of Sass: Ruby James sings the blues

“This is a story of love and faith, told through the eyes of a crow and a rose. . . The crow thanks the rose for giving it life, the rose thanks the crow for giving it flight.”

This is the story of Ruby James and her new album, Desert Rose. It’s more of a voyage, really, should listeners choose to participate. The album is a musical recount of a woman’s experiences with the joys and heartaches of love. The front cover depicts her (Ruby) alone on a dusty road about to begin her journey, when she meets a man with whom she sets out again to face the world.

As for the crow and the rose, well, Ruby is not quite ready to reveal the full tale. Had money not been an issue, a booklet would have been included with the album to tell the rest of it. She admits, “It is a letdown because [the album] alludes to the crow and the rose … I have a real idea about what the story is, and it definitely ties in with the song ‘Desert Rose,’ which is the title track of the record.”

Ruby James was born and raised in Southern California, a place that most people come to find their dreams, but for this fiery girl, who sings country, with a twang of a southern girl, and can hold a mighty punch of sex appeal that I don’t think she even realizes she possesses, it took leaving the land of sun and riches to find herself in order to find herself and her musical roots.

A little weary to open up when we had spoken a few times, I sent her a mixture of several types of questions, and said choose what you would like to answer within your comport level. Upon receiving the answers back, I was taken by surprise by her openness and the way she put herself out there. She has not had an easy life, like most of us, but for Ruby, she is used to letting it go in her music, not in song. So I personally thank her, as does All Access Magazine for her willingness to be candid with us and all the readers, and let us take a peek into her past, present, and a glimpse at what she hopes her future will be like. Like a Nomad as she is, she can blow in the wind, making the music she loves, and entrancing audiences for years to come, with songs from her heart, like the Desert Rose Ruby James is.

I’ll take substance over style any day, but if you can deliver both then all the better. With her self-released full length debut, Desert Rose, Ruby James proves that she can deliver both. From a packaging standpoint, this has to be one of the most professional looking independent releases I’ve seen in a long time. From a musical standpoint, Ruby shows that she can dish out hard driving blues rock with a broad appeal.
Ruby James’ music is rootsy enough to be included here on the pages of The East Bank, yet it definitely has mainstream potential. Think Bonnie Raitt (in terms of crossover appeal, not stylistically). Desert Rose retains its musical credibility, while offering enough polish to warrant mainstream airplay. Such a feat seems in short supply these days, quite frankly.

It has been said that music is poetry made alive, but it could also be said that with her “rootsy” southern musical stylings, Ruby James is proving that poetry can be “sweet as sin,” which just so happens to be the name of her debut EP. Her first full-length album is due out in November, and she has already received rave reviews, along with drawing comparisons to other great musicians.

Ruby James celebrated the release of her new album ” Desert Rose ” on April 21st produced by John Avila of Oingo Bongo. She regaled a sold-out crowd in L.A the legendary Troubadour club in West Hollywood . Greats such as Elton John, James Taylor and Tom Waits performed there early in their careers. Ms James will be having a live show in Atlanta for her much anticipated Southeast Record Release party on May 7th at Smith’s Olde Bar.

In Los Angeles she played to a packed house with dynamic live performance that left her audience as one fan reported ” blown away by her memorizing voice”. The receptive crowd was filled with a mixture of female and male fans young and old, who cheered at her songs and nearly at every extended guitar riff and drum solo acknowledging her talented line up of musicians. After her show the house lights came up, but fans were undeterred and continued cheering loudly until Ruby returned to the stage for a three-song encore.

” Ruby James’ rugged sensuality, which bravely masks a wearied vulnerability, is pure sonic empowerment. With “Desert Rose,” Ruby lays bare, in the grand tradition of guitar-slinging blues hitchhikers, her power to wield her own whiskey-soaked chalice and the blade to match,” writes Orlando Weekly. She has already shared the stage with Jackson Browne, Pat Mac Donald of Timbuk3 and Jane Weidlin since she began touring the United States in 2006. Ruby James is often compared to Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow and Chrissy Hynde.

Hollywood has also taken notice of Ruby’s talent. She completed a deal which will place one of the tracks from the album, “Everything Good Goes Away,” into a major studio film. Produced by Mick Jagger, “The Women” is a remake of the 1939 classic, starring an ensemble cast including Bette Midler and Meg Ryan. In the song she poignantly reminds us that “Everything Good Goes Away” except real, true, soul-defining love. “The Women” will be released in October 2008.

“Desert Rose is something that surprises and tantalizes you with its beauty and roots firmly planted in a sometimes-harsh terrain,” Ruby says. She adds: “Desert Rose the album and the song are both about a journey and possibly a homecoming. It’s a story of survival through the toughest of terrains and about a quest for self.” Ruby proves her substance as a songwriter. With the exception of what Flavorpill calls a ” velvety rendition of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” Ms. James brilliantly co-wrote all the tracks on the album. Infusing the tracks with her rustic soulful voice, she goes to the very core of mother/child relationships in heart-wrenching “Oh, Mama.” The mix crackles to life in the playful, bluesy “Mistress of the Devil,” then just as quickly disappears in the title track, “Desert Rose,” where she shares the longing for a lost, but never forgotten, love. The album is a kaleidoscope with a track for every emotion, in the spirit of legendary songwriter Emmylou Harris.

.

Desert Rose is produced by John Avila of Oingo Boingo who was drawn to Ruby James powerful talent and recorded the album with her in his Los Angeles studio. James elegantly fused rock and Americana with lyrics that explore love, loss and the lure of the road. Ruby will perform on stage in Altanta with an ensemble of talented musicians including

Rene Reyes( ACT OF FAITH Soundtracks COLLATORAL, MAN IN THE CHAIR,
Shaun Tomczak ( Filmtracks On the End of the Line and Red) and
Melaniejane, (Pat MacDonald, Sam Llanas (The BoDeans), Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes), The Silos, Sigmund Snopek and Dick Parry (saxophonist from Pink Floyd), John Doe (of X), Alejandro Escovedo, Chris Smither, Sally Timms (Mekons), Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing), Mary Fahl (October Project), Jen Chapin, Dan Bern, Jane Wiedlin (of the GoGo’s), Eric McFadden (George Clinton and P-funk, Eric Burden and the animals…), Kim Manning (P-funk), Jonathan Spottiswoode, Freedy Johnston.)

Ruby will be raising charity and awareness for a charity close to her heart ,St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® by donating a portion of her album and print sales. St Jude is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.

You should watch for an article in “Hittin the Note” magazine in May, along with All Access and other publications. Ruby has certainly gained some attention with this new album, including a placement in a major film to be released in October 2008.
